Our Traditional Floor Screed Solutions

In the world of construction and home improvements, traditional floor screed is one of the most important aspects of any project. This often unsung hero provides the foundation upon which the finishing floors are installed. Whether you choose carpet, tile, or wooden flooring for your project, all flooring types need a stable base. Traditional screed provides the stability and durability that final floor finishes need to withstand traffic and perform at their best.

Let's take a closer look at traditional flooring, the different types available, and how to go about choosing the perfect finish for your project.

What is Traditional Screed?

That's a good question and one that few people ask before selecting the right screed for their project. However, it's important to have a little bit of an understanding of floor screed so that you can be sure you get the best service and finish.

In a nutshell, a concrete floor is a blend of cement and sharp sand. It acts as the levelling layer and is applied on top of the substrate, providing a primed and smooth surface for the finishing floors. Concrete flooring is suitable for a large range of flooring types, including luxurious carpeting, classic wooden planks or sleek tiles.

Cement Screeds

Cement screeds, also known as traditional screeds, are suitable for a large range of applications. They are made up of a mix of cement and aggregate and are the go-to choice for many projects.

Sand Floor Screed

Sand floor screed is made up of cement and sharp sand. It ensures excellent strength and is a good choice for those looking to finish floors with a touch of character.

Liquid Floor Screed

Liquid screed offers a smooth texture and is easier to apply than other screed types. It's self-levelling by nature, achieving a perfectly smooth finish.

Why is Floor Screed So Important?

Floors without a good quality screed are like paintings without a good canvas. Over time, the surface can erode, leading to unevenness and an unstable surface. But when you use a high-performance screed, floors can not only endure daily wear but also withstand heavy foot traffic. Their importance in commercial projects and home improvement works cannot be ignored.

The Benefits of Traditional Screed

In addition to being cost effective, traditional floor screed offers a number of other benefits. These include:

Durability: When we talk about the durability of floor screed, it’s not just about the ability to withstand weight but also about longevity. An expertly applied screed is designed to last for decades and will ensure the overlying floor – whether it’s luxurious marble or rustic wood – remains in pristine condition for years to come.

Smooth Finish: Ever walked across a floor and felt a tiny bump or uneven area? This was probably down to the concrete below starting to crumble or lift. With a well-applied quality screed, these problems are a thing of the past.

Thermal Efficiency: Floor screed is highly effective when combined with underfloor heating. Its uniform and level finish ensures even heat distribution, enhancing the system's efficiency and providing consistent warmth throughout the living space.

Sound Insulation: A quality screed finish also contributes to improved sound insulation, reducing how noise transfers between the layers of the floor. This is especially beneficial in homes with multiple storeys and ensures footsteps or conversations don't echo into the rooms below.

Our Traditional Screed System

Trust, Quality, and Precision – that's the Screedafloor promise.

Our traditional floor screeds are laid from 65mm+ thickness on a floating floor and 50mm+ on a bonded floor. However, we can achieve a thinner application if your project requires it. For this, we would need to include additives in the screed mix which we can supply. Need your screed mixed on-site and pumped out? No problem. We can arrange that for you. Our solutions also comply with the requirements of BS EN 13813.

Mixing & Application

The secret of a quality screed is all in the mix. Whether we are mixing thicker solutions for industrial sites or a finer mix for use in home projects, we ensure our screed is tailored to the needs of the project and mixed to perfection.

Curing & Drying Time

When it comes to screed drying times, patience is key. Traditional concrete screed mixes set in around 24-48 hours. The typical drying time is around 1mm a day.

Whether you are planning to carpet your new floor, or you have your sights set on the most beautiful and sleek wooden flooring, our floor screed solutions offer an outstanding foundation.
